India Directs Airlines to Inspect Fuel Switches on Boeing Planes

India's aviation regulator has ordered airlines to inspect fuel control switches in Boeing aeroplanes following a fatal Air India crash. The switches have become a concern after a report found fuel to the engines was cut off after take-off. The US FAA has deemed the switches safe. Checks must be completed by 21 July to ensure safety.

The 2018 FAA advisory recommended inspecting the locking feature of the fuel cut-off switches. Air India had not done these inspections as they were not mandatory. The DGCA has now mandated the checks and airlines must report back.

The preliminary report on the Air India crash stated that the fuel control switches were moved to the 'cut-off' position, affecting the plane's thrust. The report does not assign blame.

Indian airline pilots' association defended the crew, stating they acted according to training. South Korea is also considering ordering checks on Boeing jets' fuel switches.
