Trump gives Russia 50 days to end Ukraine war or face severe tariffs
President Trump announced that the U.S. will impose harsh tariffs on Russia in 50 days if the war in Ukraine doesn't stop. The tariffs will target Russia's trading partners to isolate Moscow globally. Trump also mentioned sending military aid to Ukraine, with NATO covering the weapon costs.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States will impose 'very severe tariffs' on Russia in 50 days if there is no deal to stop the war in Ukraine. Trump made the announcement during a meeting with reporters alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Washington, D.C. The tariffs would be at a 100 per cent rate and would target Russia's trading partners as 'secondary tariffs' to isolate Moscow in the global economy. Direct trade between the U.S. and Russia has decreased since Russia's invasion in 2022.
Trump also mentioned that the U.S. will provide military aid to Ukraine, with NATO members covering the cost of the weapons. The weapons, including a Patriot missile system, will be sent to NATO for Ukraine's war effort. Rutte stated that a large number of weapons, including missiles, will be sent as part of the initial equipment shipment.
Trump's comments come after the Pentagon initially halted some military aid deliveries to Ukraine, which was later reversed. Trump, who had promised to end the war quickly during his campaign, has faced challenges in making progress. He has expressed mixed views on Russia and Ukraine, at times criticizing Putin and at other times expressing disappointment over the lack of a deal.
During Trump's remarks, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with U.S. envoy Keith Kellogg to discuss increasing weapons production and arms purchases. Germany has also offered to pay for Patriot systems for Ukraine, showing support as European NATO members strengthen their military capabilities under U.S. pressure.
Russia, which began its invasion in February 2022, still holds a portion of Ukraine and continues its advance in the east. Putin has expressed a desire for a negotiated end to the war but remains firm on Russia's goals. Last year, Putin was willing to halt the war with a ceasefire, but recent talks have shown Russia's demands for territorial concessions from Ukraine.
