Sharp Increase in Corporate Tax Boosts Government Finances

Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe highlighted the volatility of corporate tax due to month-to-month changes. In June, there was a significant increase in corporate tax, generating €7.4 billion, a 25% rise from last year. This boost was mainly from companies like Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Intel. Despite concerns in May, the latest figures show a 7.4% increase in corporate tax receipts for the first six months of the year, reaching €13.1 billion.

Mr. Donohoe emphasized the unpredictability of corporation tax, mentioning the establishment of the Future Ireland Fund and the Infrastructure, Climate and Nature Fund to safeguard against revenue fluctuations. The exchequer figures revealed a 4.5% increase in overall tax receipts, totaling €49.5 billion for the first half of the year.

Income tax receipts were up by 4.3% compared to last year, reflecting a strong labor market with low unemployment. Capital spending saw a substantial 22.5% increase, indicating the government's focus on infrastructure investment. Despite concerns of public spending overruns, an exchequer surplus of €4.5 billion was recorded in the first half of the year.
