RTÉ crèche kitchen and staff canteen closed due to food safety concerns

The kitchen and staff canteen of the Wee Care crèche on RTÉ's Donnybrook campus was among four premises issued with closure orders by the Food Safety Authority last month. Inspectors found a significant number of rodent droppings, posing a grave threat to food safety. The FSAI reported rodent droppings behind and underneath fridges, freezers, and an oven, with inadequate pest control procedures in place.

Closure orders were also issued for Il Vicolo restaurant in Galway, All Bar Chicken in Coolock, Dublin, and Doolin Ice Cream’s food store in Co Clare. Other enforcement orders in June included rodent droppings in a box of smoothie cup lids, lack of regular cleaning, and improper handling of defrosting fish and raw meat in a walk-in chiller.

FSAI Chief Executive Greg Dempsey emphasized the importance of maintaining food safety standards to protect public health. He stressed that food safety is not optional but essential for the success of food businesses. Non-compliance with food laws will result in enforcement actions to uphold standards.

Additional premises issued closure orders under EU regulations were Tunisian Halal Butcher in Finglas, Dublin; Frenchpark Service Station in Roscommon, and Fresh Today in Trim, Co Meath.
