Singapore’s Water Polo Teams Face Tough Challenge at World Championships
Singapore's national water polo teams are gearing up to compete against the world's best at the upcoming World Aquatics Championships. Despite their dominance in the region, the teams face stiff competition from higher-ranked opponents. The championships serve as a valuable opportunity for the teams to gain experience and improve their performance on the global stage.

Lee Kai Yang of the national men's water polo team was in action during a training session at the Singapore Sports School on July 7.
For decades, Singapore has been dominant in water polo in the region, winning 27 consecutive titles at the SEA Games since 1965. The streak was broken in 2019 but they reclaimed their crown in Phnom Penh in 2023.
However, the men’s national water polo team will face tough competition as the world’s best teams gather for the World Aquatics Championships at the OCBC Aquatic Centre from July 11 to 25. Ranked at world No. 38, they are the lowest-ranked among the 16 competing teams.
The men’s team is in Group C with strong opponents like the United States, Brazil, and Canada. Their preparations included friendly matches against Australian and Chinese teams to gear up for the challenge.
Captain Lee Kai Yang highlighted the high level of competition at the world championship level and the team's goal to make a bigger impact at the Asian level in the future.
On the other hand, the women’s team, who debuted at Doha 2024, will aim to improve their performance after finishing last in the previous championships. They have been training and competing together to enhance their teamwork and communication.
Both teams see the World Championships as valuable experience and preparation for upcoming competitions, aiming to elevate their performance on the international stage.
