Gojek Driver Verbally Abuses Passenger Using Car's Hand Rest After Surgery

A Gojek passenger said she was verbally abused by her driver for using his car's hand rest. Stomper Pari had booked the Gojek ride at around 11.18am on June 17, only to have an 'unpleasant and disturbing experience' with the Toyota Prius driver.

Pari, who just had spine surgery in May, said she wears a waist harness to support her back. She shared a photo of this with Stomp and recounted: 'During the ride, I gently pulled down the middle hand rest (which also serves as a drink holder) for support while speaking on the phone.

The driver became agitated, verbally abusive and repeatedly scolded me in foul language (in Chinese), accusing me of using the seat cushion.'

'I calmly explained that I wasn't resting my hand for comfort, but needed the support due to my medical condition. Still, he continued to shout throughout the entire ride until I reached my destination.'

Pari said she chose to ignore the driver's hostility as she had been on the phone with her mother.

'However, I found his behaviour rude, inhumane and completely inappropriate, especially towards someone who requires physical assistance when entering and exiting a vehicle,' the Stomper added.

'I am sharing this experience so that other Gojek passengers can remain cautious and aware. I believe this matter deserves public attention to prevent similar situations for others.

'I hope this complaint raises awareness about the lack of empathy shown by some drivers, and encourages platforms like Gojek to ensure more training and sensitivity towards passengers with medical needs.'

In response to a Stomp query, a Gojek spokesperson said it takes all reports of inappropriate or abusive behavior very seriously.

'Our team is reviewing the matter in line with our policies to ensure the safety and well-being of our users,' the spokesperson added.

'We are in touch with the affected parties and are taking appropriate steps. We remain committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for both driver-partners and customers.'

Pari said Gojek has refunded her for the ride.

She told Stomp on July 11: 'They informed me that the driver has been warned, although I don't have any proof of this warning. They also offered to provide a statement if I wish to proceed with a police report against the driver.

'However, as I was admitted for an emergency second surgery last Monday, I decided to drop the case for now, as my health is my priority.

'I'm just praying that no other passenger, especially someone with a disability or wearing a brace after surgery, will have to experience what I did when using Gojek.'
