5 Filipino Seafarers Rescued After Houthi Attack in Red Sea

At least five Filipino seafarers were rescued after Houthi rebels attacked their vessel, Eternity C, in the Red Sea. The Department of Migrant Workers is still determining the status of the 16 other Filipino crew members. The Liberian-flagged, Greek-operated bulk carrier sank after the attack on July 7 and 8. Of the 22 crew members, 21 are Filipinos and one is Russian. Some crew members were found in life jackets in the water and rescued, while the search continues for the rest. The Yemeni Houthis have targeted ships in the area before, but this incident marks the first reported deaths in the Red Sea since June 2024.

Another vessel, MV Magic Seas, with 17 Filipino crew members, was also attacked but all were reported safe and set for repatriation. The Department of Migrant Workers is in contact with the affected seafarers' families. Eternity C was attacked with sea drones and rocket-propelled grenades, with the crew forced to jump into the water. The Iran-aligned group has not claimed responsibility for the attack. Filipino seafarers have the right to refuse sailing through dangerous areas and are entitled to compensation if they waive this right. The DMW is monitoring the situation and considering stricter measures if attacks intensify.
