Queensland GPs Urging Flu Vaccination to Protect Community

The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) is urging Queenslanders to get a flu vaccination as the state has seen more influenza cases in the past six months than in all of 2024. By June 29 this year, 29,514 cases were recorded, surpassing the 24,708 cases confirmed last year. Experts have been warning about low vaccination rates across Australia in 2025. In Queensland, vaccination rates are low with only 16% of children aged six months to five years, 11.5% of children aged 5–15 years, and 58% of those aged over 65 being vaccinated.

RACGP Queensland Chair Dr. Cathryn Hester is worried about the declining vaccination rates putting Queenslanders at risk. She emphasizes the importance of vaccination to protect oneself and others from the flu. Dr. Hester highlights the seriousness of influenza and the need for vaccination, especially among children and older adults.

Dr. Hester stresses that getting vaccinated not only protects individual health but also helps prevent the spread of the virus to vulnerable populations. She reminds patients that the flu vaccine is free for all Queenslanders and encourages everyone to get vaccinated to stay safe from the illness.
