The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) recently discussed agricultural production and settlement of land disputes within prison reservations. The meeting involved BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. and NCIP Chairperson Dr. Marie T. Pascua.
To address land disputes between BuCor and indigenous peoples within prison reservations, Catapang mentioned the formation of a technical working group (TWG). The TWG will review land claims, identify conflicts, and propose solutions in line with legal requirements and cultural sensitivity.
The exact amount of land claimed by indigenous peoples in BuCor's prison reservations was not disclosed. Both BuCor and NCIP expressed their commitment to coordinate institutionally, emphasizing transparency, cultural respect, and a shared vision for nation-building.
During the meeting, BuCor also sought collaboration with NCIP to enhance food production within prison reservations and support the reformation of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs). BuCor currently involves PDLs in agricultural projects within its facilities, providing them with additional income from the produce.
Catapang highlighted that sustainable agriculture and land development could position BuCor as a key contributor to food security and the successful reintegration of PDLs.
