Britain’s ambassador to Ireland, Paul Johnston, has decided to step down from the diplomatic service to stay in Dublin with his wife after his term ends in September. Johnston, who played a significant role in rebuilding Anglo-Irish relations post-Brexit, expressed his love for Ireland at his annual garden party. He will be taking up a role in the education sector later this year. The decision comes after Johnston and his wife, Nicola, moved to Dublin in 2020 and enjoyed their time despite challenging political relations and the Covid pandemic.
At the party to mark King Charles’s birthday, attended by several prominent figures, Johnston announced his departure from the diplomatic service, citing his love for Dublin and the people he has met. With 35 years of service in the UK public sector, Johnston has held various roles in different countries, including Sweden and NATO.
