Pakistan to Play Key Role in Middle East Peace Efforts, PM Sharif Assures US

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke to United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday, emphasizing Islamabad's commitment to playing a constructive role in bringing peace to the Middle East amid regional tensions following the Iran-Israel military conflict.

The 12-day war between Iran and Israel started on June 13 after Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. The conflict escalated when US forces struck three Iranian nuclear sites before the ceasefire announced by Trump, claiming to set back Iran's nuclear program.

Pakistan engaged in talks with regional partners like Saudi Arabia, Iran, China, Qatar, and others to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East. Sharif mentioned that Tehran appreciated Pakistan's role during the conflict.

During the conversation, Sharif and Rubio discussed the current situation in the Middle East, with Sharif affirming Pakistan's commitment to promoting peace in the region. Rubio expressed the US's willingness to collaborate with Pakistan for peace and stability.

Pakistan and India recently had a conflict that ended with a ceasefire mediated by Trump. Pakistan thanked Trump for his role and nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize. Sharif also thanked Rubio for Washington's involvement in the Pakistan-India ceasefire.

While the ceasefire between India and Pakistan holds, tensions remain as New Delhi refuses to resume the water-sharing treaty with Pakistan. Pakistan warned that any interference with its water flow by India would be considered an act of war.
