Derek O'Brien Criticizes Election Commission Over Voter Verification Drive

Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI) for its voter verification drive in Bihar and West Bengal, suggesting it was a way to sneak in the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

O’Brien compared the procedure to the Nazi Ancestor Pass and highlighted the excessive documentary proof required based on birth year. Failure to comply could lead to removal from the electoral roll.

He questioned the timing of the exercise, alleging it was linked to BJP's poor performance predictions in Bengal. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi also raised concerns about disenfranchising poor voters in Bihar due to the verification drive.

Owaisi referenced a 1995 Supreme Court judgement and criticized the ECI's one-month verification plan as unfeasible for Bihar's marginalized population.
