Meet Sophia Roberts: The Astrophysics Science Video Producer at NASA

Sophia Roberts, an award-winning astrophysics science video producer at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, never imagined her journey would take her through clean rooms, vacuum chambers, and even a beryllium mine. Growing up in Detroit with a camera, Sophia now films space hardware assembly and explains complex topics by blending science and art together.

Receiving her first camera at a young age, Sophia pursued a degree in biology at Oberlin College, where she realized she could combine her passions for science and photography. Her role involves documenting NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope and capturing cosmic moments during its assembly and testing.

After completing a master's program in science and natural history filmmaking, Sophia worked as a presenter for the Montana Space Grant Consortium, introducing children to the wonders of space. She then interned at the Smithsonian and landed a fellowship at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, focusing on Earth science news.

Joining the James Webb Space Telescope team, Sophia honed her videography skills and navigated through unique experiences, such as documenting the mining of beryllium for the telescope's mirrors and thermal vacuum testing at NASA's Johnson Space Center.

Today, Sophia continues to cover NASA's astrophysics missions, often found in clean rooms documenting space telescope assembly or recording science explanations in a studio.
