House Prosecutors Support Ombudsman's Decision to Wait for VP Sara's Impeachment Trial Outcome
The House prosecution panel backs Ombudsman Martires' stance to await the result of Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment trial before making a decision on her case. Martires clarified that his office will not prosecute if the Senate acquits the Vice President. The investigation may extend beyond Martires' term, leaving it to the next Ombudsman to handle.

Vice President Sara Duterte spoke to the media in Melbourne, Australia on June 22, 2025. The House of Representatives prosecution panel supported Ombudsman Samuel Martires' decision to wait for the outcome of Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment trial before resolving her case. Martires clarified that his office's role is to investigate, not decide on cases. He stated that if the Senate impeachment court rules in favor of the Vice President, the Office of the Ombudsman may not pursue charges. Martires emphasized that any investigating body must await the impeachment trial result. He also denied any intention to sabotage the trial when acting on a report from the House Committee on Good Governance and Public Accountability.
On June 19, the Ombudsman requested Duterte to submit her counter-affidavit regarding alleged misuse of funds. Duterte filed her response on June 27, 2025. The House of Representatives had submitted a report accusing several individuals from the Department of Education and the Office of the Vice President of various offenses. Martires mentioned that the investigation might outlast his tenure, leaving the issue for the next Ombudsman to handle. He is set to retire on July 27 after seven years as Ombudsman.
