NTU Panel of AI Experts to Review Student's Appeal for Academic Misconduct

The Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has convened a panel of artificial intelligence experts to review the appeal of one of the three students who received zero marks for an essay in a module on health, disease outbreaks, and politics at the School of Social Sciences.

Two of the students have had face-to-face consultations with NTU to discuss their cases. The first student has submitted a formal appeal, while the second student's appeal was rejected as she admitted to using AI for the essay.

The third student did not submit an appeal. The first student, in her third year studying public policy and global affairs, faced accusations of using AI for her essay due to errors in citations and use of a reference organiser. Despite providing evidence of her writing process, she was accused of academic fraud.

NTU allows the use of AI in assignments but requires students to declare its use and ensure factual accuracy and proper citation. Some instructors may disallow AI use for specific reasons, as in this case where AI was not allowed for a written assignment to assess research skills and originality.

The university aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to use AI technologies ethically and productively. Communication of AI policies and desired learning outcomes to students is emphasized.
