Former New York governor Andrew Cuomo plans to run as an independent candidate in the New York City mayoral race after being defeated by Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic primary. Mamdani, a progressive candidate, is now the frontrunner and could potentially become the city's first Muslim mayor in the upcoming general election.

Former New York governor Andrew Cuomo plans to run as an independent candidate in the New York City mayoral race after losing the Democratic primary to progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani. Cuomo, part of a powerful political dynasty in New York, will continue on a 'Fight and Deliver' ballot line. He has not decided if he will actively campaign.
Cuomo's decision comes as the incumbent mayor, Eric Adams, also runs as an independent. Mamdani, now the favorite, could become the city's first Muslim mayor in November. Mamdani's platform includes tax hikes on the wealthy, rent freezes, and free city services, aiming for a new generation of leadership.
While Cuomo had led Mamdani by 20 points in the primary, a well-orchestrated campaign by the progressive candidate brought in passionate, younger voters, shifting the dynamics. Cuomo has until Friday to withdraw from the independent ballot line.
In response to Cuomo's independent bid, Mamdani expressed confidence, having faced off before. Meanwhile, Tennessee Republican congressman Andy Ogles called for Mamdani's deportation and denaturalization, citing concerns over Mamdani's background.
