Glastonbury Founder Stands Firm on Festival Politics Amid Controversy

The founder of Glastonbury has stated that those who disagree with the politics of performers at the festival should find another event to attend. This statement follows criticism faced by the festival for including Kneecap in the lineup, despite one member being charged under the British Terrorism Act. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer was among the critics.

Mo Chara, also known as Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, allegedly showed support for Hezbollah at a London show last year. Starmer argued that the Belfast rap trio should not be allowed to perform at Glastonbury this year. Ó hAnnaidh was recently released on unconditional bail and plans to contest the charges, claiming they are politically motivated.

When asked about the festival's values by Glastonbury Free Press, founder Michael Eavis affirmed that the event still upholds its principles. Eavis mentioned that attendees are aligned with the festival's ethos and suggested that those who do not agree with its politics can choose not to participate. Kneecap is scheduled to perform on the West Holts stage this Saturday at 4pm.

The BBC broadcasts the music festival annually. UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch expressed opposition to airing Kneecap's performance. The BBC clarified that while they do not ban artists, their programming will adhere to editorial guidelines. Kneecap recently released a short film titled 'See it. Say it. Censored.' The film, a collaboration with various artists, sheds light on the situation in Gaza based on reports from organizations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.
