New Measles Exposure Sites Identified in Winkler and Winnipeg

Public health officials with Manitoba Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care have identified two new measles exposure sites in Winkler and Winnipeg.

The first site is the Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg Children’s Hospital emergency department waiting room, where exposure occurred from June 30 at 11:10 p.m. to July 1 at 1:25 a.m. Individuals present at this location are advised to monitor for symptoms until July 23.

The second site is the Boundary Trails Health Centre emergency department at Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 3 and PTH 14 in Winkler, where exposure occurred from July 1 at 10:20 p.m. to July 2 at 1:35 a.m. Those who were at this location should monitor for symptoms until July 24.

Public health urges anyone present at these locations during the specified times to verify their immunization records and ensure they are up to date with the measles vaccine (MMR or MMRV).

For individuals born in 1970 or later who were exposed and have never been vaccinated against measles, it is recommended to get the vaccine, reduce contact with others, especially those with weakened immune systems, and watch for symptoms until the specified date.

Some individuals, such as infants under six months, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems, should not receive the measles vaccine. They are advised to contact their healthcare provider for potential preventative treatment.

Close contacts may be required to isolate and consider vaccination. More information on measles, exposures, and immunization can be found at gov.mb.ca or by contacting Health Links-Info Santé at 204-788-8200 in Winnipeg or 1-888-315-9257 toll-free in Manitoba.

Symptoms of measles typically appear seven to 21 days after exposure and may include fever, runny nose, drowsiness, irritability, red eyes, and a red rash. Complications can arise, such as ear infections, pneumonia, and encephalitis.

If symptoms develop, individuals should isolate at home, contact their healthcare provider, and limit exposure of unimmunized household members. Measles is highly contagious and spreads through droplets in the air.

Immunization is crucial for protection against measles. A two-dose vaccine program is provided in Manitoba, with outbreak eligibility for certain age groups. Contact an immunization provider to ensure vaccination status is current.
