Malaysia Confirms Existence of Document in Ex-PM Najib's House Arrest Bid
Malaysia's Attorney-General's Chambers confirmed the existence of a royal order that could allow former PM Najib Razak to serve his corruption sentence at home. Najib, convicted in 2020 for graft and money laundering related to 1MDB scandal, claims the authorities ignored the document. The case is under review following a court decision.

Najib Razak, who served as Malaysia's prime minister from 2009 to 2018, was convicted in 2020 for corruption related to the 1MDB scandal. The Attorney-General's Chambers of Malaysia confirmed the existence of a royal order that Najib claims would allow him to serve his prison sentence at home.
In 2022, Najib was sentenced to 12 years in prison, which was later reduced to 6 years by a pardons board. Najib asserts that the board also issued an order for his house arrest, a claim that Malaysian authorities have disputed.
A court ruling in January allowed Najib to seek a judicial review to verify the existence of the house arrest order. The Attorney-General's representative acknowledged the document's existence but contested its submission in Najib's review bid.
Investigations suggest that around US$4.5 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB, with over US$1 billion allegedly linked to Najib. The case continues to unfold in Malaysia.
