Lab-Grown Sperm and Eggs on the Horizon, Scientists Say

Scientists are close to creating human sex cells in the lab, which could revolutionize reproduction. Prof Katsuhiko Hayashi from the University of Osaka is leading the way in in-vitro gametogenesis (IVG), aiming to transform adult cells into eggs and sperm. Other teams in Kyoto and California are also making progress.

IVG could enable anyone to have biological children, regardless of fertility or age. This technology may also benefit same-sex couples. Lab-grown eggs could extend the fertility window for women and potentially reverse population decline.

Hayashi's team has developed primitive mouse sperm cells and human ovary organoids. The process involves reprogramming cells into stem cells, then coaxing them to become germ cells, which are placed in organoids to develop into eggs or sperm.

Lab-grown human sperm could be a reality in about seven years. However, safety testing is crucial to ensure no genetic mutations are passed on. The UK is already considering regulations for the use of lab-grown cells in fertility treatments.

The technology raises ethical questions about safety, application, and potential outcomes. Unibabies and multiplex babies could be possible, but the focus remains on ensuring safety and ethical considerations.
