Dublin Electric Car Owner Faces Dilemma Over 'Unauthorised' Charging Arm Removal

A Dublin man in his 40s, living in Ranelagh, may have to switch back to petrol or diesel after Dublin City Council ordered him to remove an 'unauthorised' charging arm in his front garden. The €3,500 arm was installed to address the lack of public charging points in the city. Despite being used only once a week, the council deemed it 'unauthorised' and demanded its removal within two months.

Dublin Electric Car Owner Faces Dilemma Over 'Unauthorised' Charging Arm Removal

A Dublin electric car owner in Ranelagh has been ordered by Dublin City Council to remove an 'unauthorised' charging arm installed in his front garden. The man, who transitioned to an electric vehicle two years ago due to a lack of public charging points in the city, faces the possibility of returning to diesel or petrol.

The charging arm, costing €3,500, is crucial for him as he does not have off-street parking. He received a letter from the council in March stating that the arm requires planning permission and must be removed within two months.

Despite similar charging arms in neighboring gardens, he feels singled out and believes enforcement is based on complaints. The lack of public charging points in the area makes it challenging for him to charge his car conveniently.

Fianna Fáil councillor Rory Hogan highlighted the dilemma faced by thousands of homes without driveways, caught between environmental concerns and outdated planning regulations. Dublin City Council has not commented on the issue.
