Air India 171 Plane Crash: AAIB Submits Preliminary Report to Civil Aviation Ministry

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has submitted its preliminary report on the Air India flight AI 171 crash to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and other concerned authorities, according to top officials in the know cited by ANI. The report is based on the initial findings of the ongoing investigation into the tragic incident.

An Air India Dreamliner from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed moments after takeoff on June 12, killing 260 people onboard and on the ground.

The crash, one of the worst air disasters in India in decades, involved a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating as Air India flight AI171.

Of the 242 people onboard, 241 were killed, while the total death toll stood at 260, including casualties on the ground.

Soon after the crash, Air India parent Tata Sons announced that it will provide ₹1 crore each to the families of each person who died in the crash.

Power Failure Led to Air India Plane Crash? A New York Times analysis of photos and videos from the June 12 Air India plane crash incident — which were reviewed with aviation safety experts, including former pilots and crash investigators, as well as an audio forensics expert — reveals key details about the disaster.

The analysis suggests that the Air India plane likely extended its wing flaps and slats before takeoff, used adequate runway distance, and took off from a typical point with a relatively normal initial ascent.

Within seconds of takeoff, however, the landing gear retraction process appears to have failed, and the plane’s emergency power generator was likely deployed.

Experts say these failures indicate that the plane could have experienced a catastrophic loss of hydraulic, electrical or engine power while airborne.

Tata Sons, Air India Announces Compensation; Reduce Flights On June 14, Air India announced that it will provide an interim compensation of ₹25 lakh, to the families of each of the deceased and survivors of the Ahmedabad plane crash to help address immediate financial needs. Tata Sons also announced ₹1 crore in ex-gratia for the AI-171 victims.

Air India on June 18 had announced a 15 per cent reduction in international flights operated with widebody planes till mid-July as amid operational disruptions due to enhanced safety inspections and geopolitical situation, among others.

\"Irrespective of any cause, the accident of AI171 and the loss of so many lives will forever stand as one of our darkest days. It must also signal the start of a new era,\" Air India chief said in the internal post, adding, \"we will continue to invest in upgrading aircraft, products, service, systems, capabilities and, most of all, people\".

Bodies of 260 victims handed over to family members The bodies of 260 people who died in the Air India-171 plane crash have been handed over to their family members, Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital, Rakesh Joshi said on 30 June.

254 victims of the crash were identified through DNA matching, while six were identified through facial recognition.

Rakesh Joshi told ANI, \"I can say that a total of 254 DNA matches were done, all identified and handed over. 6 were identified through facial recognition, and they were also handed over. So, a total of 260 bodies were identified and handed over to their family members.\"

He added that out of the 260 bodies handed over, 241 were passengers while 19 were non-passengers.
