Flash Flooding Hits New Mexico Mountain Village: 3 Missing, House Swept Away
Flash flooding caused by intense monsoon rains in a popular summer retreat in southern New Mexico led to at least three people missing and a whole house being swept downstream. Emergency crews conducted numerous swift water rescues in the Ruidoso area, with no immediate reports of deaths. The extent of the damage will be assessed once the water recedes.

At least three people were missing in a mountain village in southern New Mexico after monsoon rains caused intense flash flooding, with an entire house swept downstream. Emergency crews conducted 85 swift water rescues in the Ruidoso area. No deaths were reported, but the extent of damage is yet to be determined. The floods came shortly after flash floods in Texas.
Residents were urged to seek higher ground as the Rio Ruidoso waters rose rapidly. Streets and bridges were closed, and a weather service flood gauge showed the river overflowing. An artist witnessed a familiar house floating down the river, while reports of dead horses were also received.
The area has been vulnerable to flooding since wildfires in 2024. The burn scar from the fires could not absorb the rain, leading to record-high water levels. Three shelters were opened for displaced residents. The flooding brought back painful memories for some, with one resident describing the scene as terrifying.
