China bars ex-senator Tolentino for anti-China actions
China has banned former Philippine senator Francis Tolentino from entering its territories due to his actions against China. Tolentino sees the sanctions as a mark of pride for defending Philippine sovereignty. The move has sparked a reaction from the Philippine government and Tolentino himself.

UPDATE: Beijing has banned former senator Francis Tolentino from entering mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao due to his conduct on China-related issues. The Philippine government and Tolentino himself responded swiftly to the sanctions. Tolentino viewed the ban as a badge of honor, emphasizing his dedication to upholding the Philippines' dignity and sovereignty.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) expressed that these sanctions do not help in enhancing bilateral relations between Manila and Beijing. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the ban on July 1, a day after Tolentino's senatorial term ended.
China accused some Philippine politicians of engaging in anti-China actions that have harmed China's interests and the China-Philippines relationship. The Chinese government stated its commitment to safeguarding its national sovereignty, security, and development interests.
Tolentino advocated for the Philippine Maritime Zones Act and the Philippine Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act to reinforce the country's maritime territories and resource rights. These laws, signed in November, were criticized by Beijing, which asserts claims over most of the South China Sea.
In response to China's sanctions, Tolentino affirmed his stance on defending Filipino rights and sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea. He vowed to continue fighting for the nation's interests despite foreign pressures.
Tolentino, who chaired the Senate Special Committee on Philippine Maritime and Admiralty Zones, conducted inquiries into China's activities in the region. These investigations uncovered alleged financial ties to troll farms supported by the Chinese Embassy in Manila for spreading misinformation.
Senator Jinggoy Estrada defended Tolentino's legislative efforts to uphold sovereign rights and urged the DFA to summon the Chinese Ambassador to explain the sanctions. Estrada criticized China's actions as undermining mutual respect and regional stability.
Despite the Arbitral Ruling favoring the Philippines' claims in the West Philippine Sea, China's continued aggressive actions have drawn criticism. Estrada condemned China for labeling efforts to protect territorial claims as 'egregious conduct.'
