Masai Ujiri Leaves Toronto Raptors After Winning 2019 NBA Title

Masai Ujiri is leaving his role as president and vice chairman of the Toronto Raptors after 12 years. Ujiri and Raptors ownership mutually agreed to part ways before the final year of his contract in 2025-26.

Ujiri, 54, joined the Raptors in 2013 as executive vice president and general manager, leading the team to its first NBA championship in 2019. Before Toronto, he was the GM of the Denver Nuggets, where he was named NBA Executive of the Year.

During his tenure in Toronto, the Raptors had a record of 545-419, made the playoffs eight times in 12 seasons, and won 50+ games in five consecutive seasons from 2015-16 to 2019-20.

Ujiri is best known for bringing Kawhi Leonard and an NBA title to Toronto. He traded for Leonard in 2018, resulting in the Raptors' championship win in 2019. Since then, the team has faced challenges, missing the playoffs for three straight years.

Despite recent struggles, the Raptors are building a promising core with players like Scottie Barnes, Brandon Ingram, RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and Jakob Poeltl. Recent draft picks Collin Murray-Boyles and Alijah Martin are part of Ujiri's final moves with the team.
