The incident occurred at past 8 a.m. on Thursday as the bus was en route to Pagadian City for a military activity with the Reserve Officers Training Course (ROTC).
Ronnie Villanueva, the provincial disaster risk reduction and management officer of Zamboanga del Sur, reported that the accident took place in Barangay Mahayahay of Dumingag town. One student was found dead at the scene, and another victim, an elderly individual, succumbed to injuries at a local hospital. 27 others sustained various injuries.
Authorities stated that the Rural Transit bus, carrying 40 passengers from Sindangan town, had 29 students from St. Joseph College in Sindangan on board. These students, in their second and third year of college, were part of the National Service Training Program (NSTP) and were heading to Pagadian City for the ROTC activity.
Marthur Romero, the coordinator of the school’s NSTP, confirmed the students' affiliation but was unaware of the specific event they were attending in Pagadian City.
