Australia Sanctions Russia-Backed Fund Pravfond for Anti-Ukraine Propaganda Support

A Russian-backed organisation, Pravfond, has been sanctioned by the Australian government following an investigation that revealed its support for a prominent pro-Putin propagandist, Simeon Boikov, also known as 'Aussie Cossack'.

Pravfond's sanction means that Australian individuals and entities cannot provide assets to or for the benefit of Pravfond, and any assets held by or for Pravfond must be frozen. Australian financial authorities will closely monitor its transactions.

Founded in 2012, Pravfond aimed to defend the rights of expat Russians, offering legal assistance when needed. Previous reports have linked Pravfond to supporting individuals like Viktor Bout and Vadim Krasikov.

The joint investigation uncovered Pravfond's backing of Boikov, who was hiding in the Russian consulate in Sydney after assaulting a pro-Ukraine protester. The emails showed Pravfond's financial support for Boikov's legal fees and successful lobbying for his Russian citizenship.

Boikov, broadcasting pro-Russian propaganda from the consulate, has tens of thousands of followers on Telegram. Last week, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade added Pravfond to its list of sanctioned entities.

A spokesperson for the Russian embassy in Australia denied the allegations against Pravfond, calling them 'fake stories'. Pravfond, on the other hand, rejected the allegations, stating its mission is purely humanitarian.
