Former Patients Share Stories of Recovery from Brain Conditions
Former patients Aideen Phelan, Anne Marie Leonard, and Mike Preston share their experiences of recovering from brain conditions with the help of Peamount rehabilitation center. They highlight the importance of rehabilitation in regaining independence and improving quality of life.
Aideen Phelan, a mother-of-four, experienced speech difficulties and weakness in her right side after a brain aneurysm in April 2023. She underwent six surgeries at Beaumont Hospital and struggled to communicate with her children. Phelan's life improved after receiving care at Peamount rehabilitation center in Newcastle, Co Dublin. She worked with therapists and participated in group sessions for support.
Another patient, Anne Marie Leonard, regained her abilities at Peamount healthcare center after experiencing balance issues. She praised the therapists for helping her relearn basic tasks. Mike Preston, who suffered a stroke, also credited Peamount for his recovery, enabling him to return home mobile and independent.
The Neurological Alliance of Ireland hosted an event featuring these patients to raise awareness about the lack of neurological rehabilitation services in Ireland. The alliance is advocating for increased government investment in neurological rehabilitation beds to address the current shortfall.
