Investigation Launched After Two New HSE Ambulances Catch Fire
The HSE is urgently investigating why two new ambulances caught fire recently. Despite the incidents, public ambulance services remain unaffected. No patients or staff were harmed in the fires.

The HSE is conducting an urgent investigation into the sudden fires that destroyed two new ambulances recently. The vehicles were different makes and models, but a potential issue has been identified. The investigation aims to find common links between the incidents. A serious incident management team has been set up after the fires occurred last Saturday and Thursday. Despite this, public ambulance services remain unaffected.
One ambulance was destroyed in Castlebar, Co Mayo, while another caught fire in Tullamore, Co Offaly. Fortunately, no patients or staff were harmed as the vehicles were not in use at the time. Staff have been reminded of safety procedures and precautions. The National Ambulance Service operations are continuing as normal, with regular safety inspections and maintenance in place for all vehicles.
Last year, an internal audit revealed that the ambulance fleet budget was insufficient, leading to some vehicles being used beyond their recommended lifespan. The HSE is committed to investigating and resolving the recent incidents to ensure the safety and efficiency of ambulance services.
