Parag Jain appointed as new R&AW chief after successful role in Op Sindoor

The Narendra Modi government has appointed senior IPS officer Parag Jain as the new chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India’s external intelligence agency. Jain, a 1989-batch IPS officer of the Punjab cadre, will assume office on July 1 for a two-year term, taking over from current chief Ravi Sinha whose tenure ends on June 30.

Known as a 'super sleuth' in intelligence circles, Jain is recognized for his skill in combining human intelligence (HUMINT) with technical intelligence (TECHINT), a blend crucial for high-stakes operations. His leadership was instrumental in Operation Sindoor, facilitating precise missile strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Years of groundwork and network-building paved the way for the successful missile strikes, showcasing Jain's expertise. His extensive experience in Jammu and Kashmir, a challenging security region, is expected to be valuable in navigating the complex global security landscape.

Described as methodical and discreet, Jain has held key positions in his career, including as Director General of Police (DGP) in Punjab from January 1, 2021. He has been empanelled for central DGP-equivalent roles, highlighting his leadership credentials in national intelligence. Jain has also represented India in Canada and Sri Lanka.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Jain's appointment on June 28, putting an end to speculation about Ravi Sinha's successor. Sinha's tenure was considered low-profile compared to Jain's upcoming leadership.
