Vice President Claims Preamble of Constitution Changed During Emergency Despite Being 'Not Changeable'

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar stated that the Preamble of a Constitution is not changeable and serves as the foundation for the document's growth. He highlighted that the Preamble of India's Constitution was altered in 1976 to include the words 'socialist', 'secular', and 'integrity', a change unique among all Constitutions.

Reflecting on B.R. Ambedkar's meticulous work on the Constitution, he emphasized the significance of the Preamble. His comments followed a call by the RSS to review the terms 'socialist' and 'secular' in the Preamble, arguing that they were added during the Emergency and were not part of the original Constitution.

The RSS's proposal sparked criticism from opposition parties, with the Congress condemning it as political opportunism and an attack on the Constitution's essence. However, supporters defended the call, aiming to restore the Constitution's 'original spirit' by removing perceived distortions from the Emergency era.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh supported the RSS's stance, asserting that the words in question were not part of the original Constitution drafted by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
