India Declared Trachoma-Free by WHO in 'Mann Ki Baat' Address by PM Modi

In his monthly ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (June 29, 2025) announced that India has been declared free of Trachoma, an eye disease. Trachoma is a bacterial infection of the eyes caused by Chlamydia trachomatis and is a leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide, especially in areas with poor access to clean water and sanitation.

Mr. Modi mentioned that around 95 crore people are benefiting from social security schemes in India, a significant increase from previous years. He cited an International Labour Organisation (ILO) report stating that over 64% of India’s population is receiving some form of social protection benefit.

Mr. Modi also highlighted the importance of remembering those who fought against the Emergency period in India. He condemned the atrocities committed during that time and emphasized the need to stay vigilant to protect democracy.

On the occasion of the International Yoga Day, Mr. Modi praised the widespread participation in yoga activities across the country and globally. He mentioned various events where people came together to practice yoga, promoting health and unity.
