HPV Linked to Rising Cancer Cases in Young Indians, Doctors Warn

A growing number of oncologists in India are concerned about Human Papillomavirus (HPV) contributing to the rise of cancers in young Indians, especially those in their twenties and thirties. Cervical, oral, and oropharyngeal cancers are on the rise due to HPV infections, posing a preventable crisis if immediate action is not taken.

Chief of Medical Oncology at Amerix Cancer Hospital, New Delhi, Ashish Gupta, emphasized the need for timely vaccination and awareness to prevent HPV-related cancers. Gupta highlighted the importance of a nationwide campaign targeting schools, colleges, and parents to address the lack of awareness and stigma surrounding HPV discussions.

HPV, a sexually transmitted infection, can lead to various cancers if certain high-risk strains persist. Despite the availability of vaccines in private settings, India lacks a national HPV vaccination program. Experts advocate for universal HPV immunization for preteens and catch-up vaccinations for older teens and young adults to combat this epidemic.

Dr. Gupta stressed the importance of routine screening alongside vaccination to detect precancerous changes early. Normalizing conversations about HPV and cancer, and making screening accessible at all healthcare facilities, are crucial steps in preventing the spread of HPV-related cancers.
