Work is finally getting underway on the long-promised Woodbine GO Station in Etobicoke. Premier Doug Ford announced that construction is officially starting on the station, initially announced by the province in 2019. The station is a crucial part of the plan to offer two-way all-day GO service, connecting Kitchener Line travelers to Pearson Airport, the UP Express, local transit, and the Woodbine Racetrack.

Although the original opening target was 2023, delays in starting construction were due to environmental assessments and community consultations. Woodbine Entertainment will contribute $170 million towards the station's construction. The total cost was not disclosed by the province.

Ford emphasized that the new station will significantly benefit North Etobicoke and daily Kitchener Line commuters, offering improved connections, services, and fostering community growth and job opportunities.

The upcoming work phase will involve sewer and utility works, road realignment, and track adjustments for the platform at Woodbine Station. Once completed, the station will be accessible with dedicated parking, a passenger area, a bus loop, and connections to various transit services.

Mayor Olivia Chow highlighted that the new station will help establish a vibrant neighborhood with new homes and amenities. She mentioned the potential for thousands of construction jobs and a transit-oriented community to emerge around Woodbine GO Station.

Metrolinx anticipates that the station will cater to around 7,000 daily riders by 2041.
