In a significant development, the Civil Aviation Ministry has recovered and started analyzing the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR) of Air India 171, crucial for understanding the June 12 crash that claimed 275 lives. The black box was brought to Delhi from Ahmedabad on June 24. The efforts aim to reconstruct the events leading to the accident and enhance aviation safety.
The memory module was successfully accessed, and data was downloaded at the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) laboratory under the Union Civil Aviation Ministry. The Crash Protection Module (CPM) from the front black box was retrieved safely, and its data was downloaded on June 25.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu confirmed that the black box is being investigated by AAIB in India. Reports of sending it to the US due to damage from the crash were denied. The intense fire at the crash site reaching 1,000 degrees Celsius caused extensive damage to the black box.
The AAIB recovered the CVR and FDR two days after the crash. Decoding the black box is crucial for understanding the crash. An aviation expert suggested dual engine failure as a possible cause, pointing to the deployment of the ram air turbine shortly after takeoff.
