U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has confirmed that a Canadian citizen, Johnny Noviello, 49, died while in custody in Florida. He was found unresponsive and pronounced dead on June 23 at 1:36 p.m. The cause of his death is under investigation.

Mr. Noviello was being detained at the Bureau of Prisons Federal Detention Center pending deportation proceedings. He entered the U.S. in 1988 with a legal visa and became a lawful permanent resident in 1991. He was convicted of drug trafficking in 2023 in Volusia County.

ICE arrested him on May 15, 2025, and charged him with removability due to his drug convictions. Enforcement and Removal Operations informed Canada's consulate about his death and stated their commitment to providing safe and humane environments for those in custody.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand expressed condolences and stated that Canadian officials are seeking more information from U.S. authorities while respecting the family's privacy.
