Alert: Heavy Rain and Flooding Expected in Pakistan

Pakistan’s Meteorological Department has issued an alert for heavy rains in the upper parts of the country, including Rawalpindi and Islamabad, on July 6 and 7.

The alert warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall that may lead to flash floods in various areas such as Murree, Galiyat, Abbottabad, Swat, and Islamabad/Rawalpindi.

Flash flooding is also possible in hill torrents of D.G. Khan, northeast Punjab, Kashmir, and parts of Balochistan. Landslides and mudslides could cause road closures in hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galiyat, and Kashmir.

Heavy downpours may result in urban flooding in low-lying areas of several cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Peshawar.

Moist currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are entering the country, and a westerly wave is expected to affect the upper part of the country from Sunday evening.

On Saturday, Rawalpindi and Islamabad experienced heavy rain with the maximum rainfall of 75 millimetres recorded in Saidpur.

Chilas in Gilgit-Baltistan recorded a temperature of 48.5 degrees Celsius, its highest since 1997. Meanwhile, parts of Balochistan saw temperatures of up to 48 degrees Celsius.
