Veterinarians Stress Importance of Vaccination and Biosecurity After Hendra Virus Case

Equine Veterinarians Australia (EVA), a special interest group of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), emphasizes the importance of vaccination and biosecurity following a confirmed case of Hendra virus in an unvaccinated horse in south-east Queensland by Biosecurity Queensland.

Dr Laura Hardefeldt, EVA President, praised the veterinarian involved in managing the case and highlighted the crucial role of horse owners in preventing the spread of this deadly disease.

Dr Hardefeldt stated, 'This case serves as a reminder that Hendra virus remains a significant threat. Vaccination is our best defense to safeguard horses, veterinarians, and the wider community.'

Dr Gemma Chuck, AVA President, supported the call for vigilance, emphasizing the severe consequences of Hendra virus despite its rarity.

The AVA and EVA urge veterinarians and horse owners to collaborate in promoting vaccination and biosecurity measures to safeguard animal and human health. They advocate for widespread adoption of the Hendra virus vaccine and advise horse owners to consult their veterinarian regarding vaccination and the use of protective gear when handling sick animals.
