AI Technology Improves Patient Experience at NHS Hospitals in Hull

Hospital bosses at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust have reported that AI technology is enhancing the patient experience. Staff at NHS hospitals in Hull have observed that AI technology has reduced MRI scan times, allowing them to accommodate more patients. The software utilizes algorithms to minimize background noise, resulting in sharper images in a shorter duration. Karen Bunker, head of imaging, mentioned that this advancement enables a reduction in scanning time for certain sequences while maintaining imaging quality.
The Air Recon Deep Learning (ARDL) software has been integrated into the existing MRI machines at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital. It is also set to be implemented at Scunthorpe General Hospital and Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby. Staff noted that the software has decreased average scan times by 10 to 15 minutes. For instance, a routine MRI head scan that previously took 30 minutes now only takes 20 minutes, and a prostate scan that used to take 45 minutes is now completed in 30 minutes. The trust disclosed that they can now scan 31 lumbar spine patients within a 12-hour timeframe, compared to 21 patients previously.
Ms. Bunker highlighted that individuals with claustrophobia or learning disabilities, who previously struggled with longer scan times, are now able to endure the shorter durations. Additionally, fewer children require general anesthesia to undergo scans. This technological advancement is positively impacting patient care and comfort at the hospitals.
