World's Oldest Marathon Runner Fauja Singh Dies at 114 in Hit-and-Run Incident

Indian-born runner Fauja Singh, believed to be the world's oldest marathon runner, has passed away at the age of 114 after being hit by a car. Local media reported that he sustained severe head injuries in a hit-and-run accident while crossing the road in his native village near Jalandhar in Punjab. He later died in the hospital. His London-based running club, Sikhs In The City, confirmed his death.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Mr Singh, praising his unique persona and his inspiration to the youth on fitness. Mr Singh made history in 2011 by becoming the oldest man to run a full marathon at the age of 100 in Toronto. Despite not having a birth certificate, his British passport indicated his birthdate as April 1, 1911.

After facing personal tragedies, including the death of his son, Mr Singh took up running at the age of 89 to overcome depression. He participated in marathons and set records, with his last competitive race in 2013 at the age of 101 in Hong Kong. Following his retirement, he expressed his desire to be remembered and invited to events.
