Teen Caught Selling Unregistered Contact Lenses on Telegram in Singapore

An 18-year-old girl in Singapore was caught selling unregistered contact lenses on Telegram as authorities cracked down on illegal health products online. The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) removed 171 listings of unregistered contact lenses from local e-commerce and social media platforms and blocked 16 overseas websites selling such lenses to consumers in Singapore.

These unregistered contact lenses, marketed at attractive prices, have not been evaluated by HSA for safety and quality. They could lead to serious complications like eye infections, corneal ulcers, and potential vision impairment.

The 18-year-old girl purchased 500 lenses from an overseas website at S$6 per pair and sold each pair at S$12, making a profit. She advertised the lenses on Telegram from her booth in a shopping mall in the East. A joint operation by HSA and the Ministry of Health seized 280 lenses, and enforcement action has been taken against her. The seller is also under investigation by MOH.
