Séamus Power remains in contention among the chasing pack at the John Deere Classic after a third-round 68 kept him within three shots of the lead. The Waterford man had been within three strokes of Doug Ghim after the halfway stage on Friday but with defending champion Davis Thompson now assuming the summit following his 67 on Saturday, Power remains within sight of the new leader by the same margin going into Sunday's final round in Illinois.

Power's front nine on Saturday was a mixed bag as he started to build momentum with back-to-back birdies on five and six. But he followed that up with bogeys on seven and nine. However, he found form on the back nine, with another set of back-to-back birdies on 11 and 12 before finishing with a flourish on the 18th. That leaves Power on 12 under in a four-way tie for sixth going into Sunday's tournament climax at the TPC Deere Run course.

Meanwhile, defending champion Thompson established a one-shot lead after his four-under 67 took him to 15 under for the week in Illinois, one ahead of fellow Americans Brian Campbell, Max Homa and David Lipsky, as well as Argentina's Emiliano Grillo. Ghim dropped back to nine under and a tie for 21st after a 74.

Homa, who has dropped from the top 10 to 99th in the world rankings over the last year and recently found himself carrying his own bag during US Open qualifying, was pleased to be back in contention. \"Golf has just been very boring for me this year,\" he said in quotes on pgatour.com. \"I haven't had a whole lot of stress, and you want to be stressed out. So I look forward to the butterflies in the morning; I look forward to the first tee shot. It's just nice to get to feel that again. It's been a while.\"
