A man stole two boxes containing nearly S$50,000 worth of red packets meant for a couple during their wedding reception at a hotel in Singapore. Lee Yi Wei, 36, a former part-time banquet server at the JW Marriott hotel, was sentenced to a year's jail and ordered to pay about S$46,000 to the victim by Jul 31. If he can't pay, he faces another 100 days in prison. He pleaded guilty to theft and gambling charges.

The victim, a 29-year-old groom, had the red packets placed on a table at the ballroom's foyer. Lee, familiar with the layout, took the boxes when the table was unattended and fled. CCTV footage captured him in action. Lee transferred the stolen money to buy clothes and gamble. He was arrested on Apr 7 with S$3,000 seized from him.
