Low Cancer Screening Rates Despite High Awareness in Kerala, Survey Reveals
A recent survey in Kerala by the Association of Medical and Pediatric Oncologists of Kerala (AMPOK) highlights a concerning trend where 80% of respondents have never undergone cancer screening, despite high awareness of cancer risks. Experts emphasize the importance of bridging this gap to reduce the burden of cancer and improve survival rates in the state.

A new survey by the Association of Medical and Pediatric Oncologists of Kerala (AMPOK) has revealed a concerning gap in cancer awareness and preventive care in the state. While 90% of respondents recognized smoking and alcohol consumption as major cancer risks, 80% admitted to never having undergone cancer screening, despite 84% expressing concern about their personal risk of developing cancer.
Experts emphasize the importance of bridging this gap to reduce the increasing cancer burden and enhance survival rates in Kerala. Dr Aju Mathew, the organizing chairman of the association, highlighted the need for immediate attention to address the significant knowledge gaps in preventive measures, low screening rates, and the impact of celebrities on substance use among youth.
Although the cancer burden in the state is on the rise, the survey also revealed positive societal attitudes. Only 17% of participants viewed a cancer diagnosis as always fatal, and 66% believed that cancer did not carry stigma within their communities.
Dr Boban Thomas, the organizing secretary of AMPOK, emphasized the significant advancements in cancer treatments, noting that early diagnosis could lead to a cure rate of up to 99% in some cancer types.
The survey, conducted between October and December 2024, included 2,443 participants, with the majority residing in Kerala. Despite high awareness levels, misconceptions persist, with some respondents linking mobile phone use and safe pesticides to cancer risk.
Data for the survey was collected through online and door-to-door print surveys.
