Judge Upholds De Lima's Acquittal in Drug Case
A court in Muntinlupa City reaffirmed its decision to acquit Leila de Lima and her former driver of drug trading charges. The judge cited the recantation of a key witness as a basis for upholding the presumption of innocence. De Lima, a former justice secretary, spent years in detention before being released on bail in 2023.

A Muntinlupa City court affirmed its decision to acquit Leila de Lima and her former driver Ronnie Dayan of conspiracy to commit illegal drug trading charges.
The Court of Appeals Eighth Division had voided the RTC's decision in April but the RTC Judge Abraham Joseph Alcantara maintained the acquittal based on the recantation of a key witness, former Bureau of Corrections chief Rafael Ragos.
Ragos had initially testified that he delivered drug proceeds to De Lima's house, but he later retracted his statement. The court emphasized the importance of his testimony in establishing conspiracy.
De Lima was released on bail in November 2023 after spending nearly seven years in detention. The last of her drug-related cases was dismissed in June 2024.
