An Irish veterans charity, Óglaigh Náisiúnta na hÉireann (ONE), is urging former Defence Forces members who fought in Ukraine to seek support. The charity is currently assisting seven former Irish soldiers who served in Ukraine and believes there may be more veterans in need of help.
Cormac Kirwan, CEO of ONE, highlighted that pride often prevents individuals from seeking assistance. He encouraged anyone aware of a struggling veteran to reach out, emphasizing the availability of six full-time veteran support officers who are professional counsellors and psychotherapists.
One Irish man, who served in Ukraine as a special forces operative, shared his experience of improved mental health after engaging with ONE. Despite initial struggles upon returning home, seeking help from the charity has been transformative for him.
ONE support officer Audra Larkin noted the challenges faced by soldiers reintegrating into civilian life post-war, emphasizing the importance of providing a shared language and understanding for veterans.
