Intel to Cut Nearly 200 Jobs at Leixlip Plant

Almost 200 mandatory redundancies are expected this autumn at the Intel plant in Leixlip, Co Kildare, according to sources. The company is undergoing a major restructuring, but the plant, with almost 5,000 employees, will remain central to operations. However, around 195 positions, less than five per cent of the workforce, are anticipated to be cut.

The company has informed the Department of Trade, Enterprise and Employment about the move, and a consultation process is set to begin soon. Earlier reports suggested a potential 20% global workforce cut, raising concerns about larger layoffs.

Intel's new CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, aims to make tough decisions to revive the struggling chipmaker. The company plans to enter a consultative period with staff after the announcement, with job reductions expected by September.

Intel Ireland did not specify the exact number of job cuts, emphasizing the need to become leaner and more efficient. Last year, Intel slashed 15,000 jobs as it faced challenges in the market. Mr. Tan is restructuring the company's management layers and culture, with plans for more changes, including increased office attendance.

Local TD Joe Neville highlighted Intel's significant employment impact in Leixlip and emphasized the importance of supporting affected staff and families during this transition.
