GST Collections Double in 5 Years, Hit Record High of Rs 22.08 Lakh Crore in FY25

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) system has witnessed a significant expansion in its taxpayer base, growing from 65 lakh in 2017 to over 1.51 crore in eight years. The latest government data revealed that Gross GST collections hit a record high of Rs 22.08 lakh crore in the fiscal year 2024-25, doubling from Rs 11.37 lakh crore in FY21. The average monthly collection rose to Rs 1.84 lakh crore in FY25, a notable increase from Rs 1.68 lakh crore in FY24 and Rs 1.51 lakh crore in FY22.
The fiscal year 2024-25 saw a remarkable growth of 9.4% in GST collections compared to the previous year, showcasing the robust revenue growth and expansion of the tax base. The GST implementation has strengthened India's fiscal position, making indirect taxation more efficient and transparent.
Since its inception, GST has consolidated numerous local taxes and cesses into a simplified five-tier framework, streamlining the taxation system. The monthly collections peaked at Rs 2.37 lakh crore in April 2025 and Rs 2.01 lakh crore in May 2025, with June figures set for release on Tuesday.
