India's Defense Minister Rajnath Singh Refuses to Sign SCO Joint Statement Over Terror Concerns
During the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) defense ministers' meeting, India's Defense Minister Rajnath Singh declined to sign the joint communique due to the document's failure to address terrorism-related worries. Singh emphasized the need for collective action to combat terrorism for the safety and security of all member countries.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) defence ministers’ meeting on Thursday did not issue a joint communique as India’s defence minister Rajnath Singh refused to sign the document. Singh cited its failure to address terrorism-related concerns. He emphasized the need for the bloc to unite in eliminating terrorism for collective safety and security.
Singh, attending the meeting in China’s Qingdao, did not sign the joint communique as it omitted the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 people were killed. China, the current president of the SCO, has strong ties with Pakistan, which it supported during recent clashes with India under Operation Sindoor.
India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, hitting nine terror camps inside Pakistan and PoK. Singh highlighted the challenges of peace, security, and trust-deficit in the region, emphasizing the need for decisive action against terrorism.
Singh also questioned the safety of nuclear weapons under Pakistan’s control and demanded their supervision by the IAEA. He called for holding accountable the perpetrators of terrorism and proactive measures to combat radicalization among youth.
