Hong Kong Airport Resumes Flights After Typhoon Wipha

The Airport Authority has stated that Hong Kong International Airport is expected to handle 1,076 flights on Monday to clear the backlog caused by Typhoon Wipha. The typhoon hit the city the day before.

Outbound passengers are waiting while others are queuing to check in as flights resume at the airport. Typhoon Wipha moved away from the city on July 20, 2025.

Steven Yiu, the executive director for airport operations, mentioned that stranded travelers affected by the typhoon should be handled by the next day. However, some travelers with less frequent flight routes may have to wait for replacement flights.

The airport, airlines, and additional personnel have been deployed to assist travelers, according to Yiu.

The Hong Kong Observatory raised the T10 storm signal on Sunday morning as Typhoon Wipha passed through the city. This was the first time the highest storm signal had been raised since September 2023.

Over 500 flights were canceled, affecting 100,000 passengers on Sunday due to the typhoon. Flights resumed after the storm warning signal was lowered to T8.

While the airport continued to handle rescheduled flights on Sunday, it would take a few days to clear the backlog of canceled flights. All departure security gates were fully operational to serve passengers overnight.

The airport and runways were back to normal operational capacity on Monday, with flight reallocation ongoing. The departure hall was busy in the morning due to the peak summer holiday season.
